Applications

Industrial Gas and Steam Turbines

As the worldwide electrical demand continues to increase the need for advanced component repair has never been greater.  From our strategic global locations, LPW Technology supplies a wide range of metal powders used in the Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) of turbine component manufacture and repair.

These include Hastelloy C-263, Hastelloy-X, Haynes-230, Inco-625, Waspaloy, Inco-718, Inco-738, FSX-414, Mar-M-247, Stellite-6, CM-64, 17-4ph, and AISI-4140.  Applications include shroud blade restoration with Inco-625 or Mar-M-247, interlock hard-facing with CM-64 or T-800, bucket tip restoration with Haynes-230 or Hastelloy-X, and coating of leading edges with Stellite-6. In addition, shaft repair are undertaken with selected nickel or steel alloys.

Aerospace

LMD applications are similar to those of industrial turbines. For example, Inco-718, Ti-6Al-4V, or Ti-811 in compressor blade repair, and Rene-142 or Inco-625 for turbine blade and shroud repair. LPW Technology has approval with Rolls Royce, GE, and Pratt & Whitney, with both ISO 9001 and BS EN/AS 9120 certification.

In addition, our additive manufactures powder are being applied in a range of novel Powder Bed/Additive Metal Manufacture applications currently being developed for alternative methods of manufacture.

Petrochemical

For the application of wear-resistant coatings, LMD is increasing being seen as a cost-effective, technologically-superior alternative to HVOF. Metallurgical bonding is better and thicker coatings can be applied. Typical powders are Stellite-6, Hastelloy C-276, Inco-625, WC, WC-Co, and Cr-CrC. These materials are used in combination to deliver high-strength, corrosion-resistant coatings that enable the industry to meet the ever increasing design and repair requirements of today’s rigorous exploration and production activities including down-hole drilling tools and wellhead products.

Medical

LPW Technology is heavily involved in the supply of powders for Powder Bed/Additive Metal Manufacture technology used for the production of medical and bio-medical equipment and implantable devices.  Materials include Titanium CP Grade 1 & 2, Titanium 6-4 Grade 5 and 23, ASTM F-75 (Co-Cr-Mo), and 17-4ph for dental implants, prosthetic devises, as well as bone and joint replacements. Key to this is LPW Technology’s ability to offer a consistent supply, of fully traceable powder, meeting the tightest quality specifications.

General Engineering

In addition to the specialised applications above, we supply steel powders for use in automotive tool repair using LMD and tooling manufacture using Powder Bed/Additive Metal Manufacture. Typical Powder Bed/Additive Metal Manufacture materials include 18Ni300 (1.2709), 17-4ph, and 15-5ph.
